In Untitled 15, Francisco Larios develops a geometric composition defined by strong contrast, with precisely arranged golden lines moving across a dark ground to create a visual network of rhythms, interruptions, and angular forms. The repetition of lines generates depth and movement, while distinct shapes seem to emerge and disappear within the structure. The result combines an almost architectural appearance with a handcrafted execution, giving the surface a strong physical presence. This geometric painting invites close observation of the subtle changes in direction, density, and scale that organize the composition, revealing a more intricate visual experience as the work is viewed from different distances.

Ryōan-ji is the Japanese Zen temple in Kyoto, a monastery that gave rise to the idea of the purely abstract Zen garden that inspired this series Francisco Larios’ works are done by hand with hundreds of layers of gold leaf. The artist’s goal is to allow the work to age along with the collector, which is why some works will appear unbalanced in color. Parts of the work will have different tones, burnish spots, or small, soft cracks.
