This breathtaking photographic triptych in mixed media stands as a definitive and powerful statement within the highly celebrated series I Will Make You A Star (IWMYAS) by creative partnership Hunter & Gatti (2010–2023). Deeply inspired by the raw, energetic vocabulary of Jean-Michel Basquiat's neo-expressionist paintings, the artists construct a striking three-panel installation that challenges the boundaries of contemporary celebrity culture. The composition links three intimate high-contrast portraits: icon David Gandy submerged beneath a thick, tar-like black oil mask; music pioneer Pharrell Williams deconstructed via structural skeletal facial graphics and crimson loops over his classic tuxedo; and actor Jamie Dornan overlaid with Basquiat’s legendary three-pointed crown notation.
Hunter & Gatti wanted to pay tribute to the neo-expressionist Jane-Michel Basquiat’s legacy by merging the celebrity portraits they had made in the past for fashion editorials and campaigns, featuring the most iconoclastic members of today’s fashion scene, with Basquiat’s paintings that transcend the limits of the art world and form part of our collective unconsciousness – just like the famous faces of their photos. Their idea was to create a series of original hybrids that explore the limits of popular culture, reflecting, at the same time, fashion’s on-going interest in the art world.
