The brilliant spatial intuition and playful conceptual focus of contemporary artist José Ricardo Contreras within his celebrated Composition with Tools series. Executed as a unique mixed media masterpiece utilizing acrylic on canvas, wooden structures, and a real screwdriver, the artwork engages observers with quirky truisms, presenting edit instruments as independent aesthetic images to awaken their sensitive potential with an intelligent sense of humor. The visual layout anchors a powerful vertical layout framing two slender —one dressed in a saturated radiant red field, the other in deep matte black— leaning slightly against the gallery wall while separated and held together in spatial tension by a literal, physical screwdriver tool near the upper edges.

The “Composition with Tools” series engages observers with quirky and playful truisms, gently leading them toward deeper reflections. Jose Ricardo Contreras, after long hours using digital editing tools, presents these tools as images themselves, highlighting their hidden aesthetics. This generates associations and similarities, awakening their sensitive potential with a humor parallel to their constant search for new perspectives on everyday life.

As a result of his work, he has held solo and group exhibitions in Colombia and Spain. Currently, its process is guided by two investigations that are conducted in parallel.
