Part of Shine Huang’s critically acclaimed Carry the Ocean series, this unique physical creation treats the single sheet of premium paper as an analytical laboratory for material and historical dynamics, focusing on adapting historical photographic processes into contemporary fine art. The diptych tracks an intense, deeply meditative graphic rhythm where unique abstract photographs are created without a camera by placing translucent objects directly on photosensitive paper and exposing it to light. The horizontal arrangement coordinates two independent sheets, juxtaposing a glowing ghost-like ancient text page on the left panel with an open historical volume showing a faint angel outline on the right panel over a deep, light-absorbing environmental void.
This project uses photograms, which are unique abstract photographs created without a camera by placing objects on photosensitive paper and exposing it to light. The result is a negative shadow image varying in tone, depending on transparency of the objects used. Areas of the paper that have received no light appear light; those exposed through transparent or semi-transparent objects appear dark.
