Using everyday items to build mysterious and impressive images, the graphic canvas acts as a personal mirror reflecting the photographer's internal understanding of being an immigrant living in the United States. The vertical layout anchors a powerful perspective structured around a dramatic low-key studio setup Shifting between ideas of displacement and architectural balance, the layout isolates a single negative shadow image of a traditional spice bowl with an elevated center arched handle, allowing its transparent and semi-transparent structural walls to emit glowing white visual textures over a solid black background field.
This project uses photograms, which are unique abstract photographs created without a camera by placing objects on photosensitive paper and exposing it to light. The result is a negative shadow image varying in tone, depending on transparency of the objects used. Areas of the paper that have received no light appear light; those exposed through transparent or semi-transparent objects appear dark.
