In "Untitled VIII," José Sierra expands the boundaries of his exploration of identity, body, and territory, breaking free from the claustrophobic confinement of his earlier works to delve into the heart of nature. The male nude is reinterpreted by incorporating elements reminiscent of mythological figures or deities from classical antiquity—such as a crown of fruit and a vibrant red cloak—but recontextualized within the untamed tropical environment. The work establishes a direct dialogue between the vulnerability of the exposed body and the imperturbability of the surrounding vegetation, questioning the concepts of sovereignty, rootedness, and the myth of the "noble savage" in the collective imagination of the Caribbean and tropical America.
This work is the result of an artistic residence outside his "study”.The artist worked on a different ecosystem, a house of vernacular architecture built in 1913 in the department of Huila, Colombia. It is important to highlight the practice session of watching over and recording each detail of this space to get a correct reading between the aesthetics of the place and the body.
A striking photograph that merges male nudity, classical mythology, and the exuberance of the tropical, aesthetics and corporeal presence explored through careful observation and recording. Color photography from La Costilla Roja. Available at The Art Design Project, Miami Beach.
