Arcila-Duque Gallery in collaboration with The Time Is Always Now are pleased to announce the exhibition:

50 YEARS OF PORTRAITS

January19, 2001

The exhibition "Peter Beard: 50 Years of Portraits" opened on January 19, 2001. This prominent showcase was presented by Juan Carlos Arcila-Duque from the a-d Gallery in collaboration with the artistic platform The Time Is Always Now. The massive exhibition celebrated the lifetime career of the legendary American photographer Peter Beard, cementing his impact on contemporary art. The showcase compiled half a century of untraditional portraits blending photography, illustrated diaries, and multimedia collages. The works captured his life in East Africa, wild fauna, and iconic figures like Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon. His pieces reflect a unique, visceral style integrating handwritten texts and detailed drawings.

Winter 2001 is an auspicious time for the burgeoning, intertwined worlds of art and design in Miami, and an exhilarating season for Columbian-born designer Juan Carlos Arcila-Duque.

January 19 also marks the launch of a-d, Arcila-Duque’s latest venture. Located in the heart of the Miami Design District at 70 NE 40th Street, a-d is a 2,700-square-foot project space with raven-black floors, soaring ceilings and a lush, tropical garden to the rear. Appropriately for a place that will celebrate art and design, a-d is housed in a 1950s modernist building that has been carefully restored. It also abounds with sleek white walls for showing first-rate photographic works.

For its inaugural exhibition, a-d is proud to present Peter Beard: 50 Years of Portraits, a spectacular retrospective of the renowned American photographer’s oeuvre. Curated by Peter Tunney, the show includes haunting images from Beard’s sojourns in Africa as well as intimate portraits of friends such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Tina Turner, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, and Brigitte Bardot. This museum-quality exhibition is comprised of nearly 200 works, some of which have never been shown before. And it is accompanied by a hardcover book.

Beginning in March, a-d will also be the exclusive Miami showcase for furniture by some of the most highly regarded designers working today. a-d’s star lineup includes India Madhavi--the young Paris-based architect and designer whom Vogue recently hailed as “the next big thing in the world of design,” as well as the much-published, exceptionally talented Alison Spear and Lulu de Kwiatkowski. In addition, a-d will carry Arcila-Duque’s own signature line of furniture, which is also available at www.hautedecor.com

Currently, Arcila-Duque is putting the final touches to his design for MYNT Ultra Lounge, South Beach’s highly anticipated new nightspot at 20th and Collins, which is scheduled to open in early February 2001.
