"Chiromorphose" 2010
Nico Baixas / Gos-com-fuig
(Photographies by Mara Sanchez-Renero)
This triptych of hand geometries photography maps three distinct configurations in visual dialogue—circular outer panels establishing rhythmic symmetry and architectural precision while the central panel introduces organic asymmetry through playful finger choreography. Negative space becomes as sculptural as flesh, creating voids that operate between dimensional planes. The composition embodies Baixas' puppetry background, where hands transform into autonomous performers conjuring worlds through pure articulation.
This work explores the sculptural capacities of the hands. Stripping them from their symbolism or the functions for which they are normally used, I explored them like someone examining a foreign body, searching for their limits and pushing them in different directions. To do this, I used opposed sculptural concepts like straight-curved, and simple-complex; searched for the interconnection between fingers, and the balance between distances, and tried to generate geometric shapes and textures. At times, I would find shapes that were like doors opening onto a myriad of new possibilities. Throughout the process, I discovered a world of fingers that transformed reality taking it to another level.
This body of work represents an abstract development in which the artist intentionally avoids mimicking recognizable forms. Nevertheless, the resulting compositions are profoundly suggestive, evoking architectural structures, industrial designs, and organic elements such as corals, shells, and botanical silhouettes. This phenomenon arises because many natural and man-made objects share the same mathematical patterns and proportions inherent in the physical world. The artist explores how the alignment of biological structures—such as the correspondence between human phalanges and the Fibonacci sequence—relates to the Golden Ratio. By invoking this 'ideal of beauty' championed by Greek and Renaissance thinkers, the work achieves a singular aesthetic equilibrium, touching upon a nearly divine dimension through the language of geometry.
Acquire a conversation in three gestures. This museum-quality triptych (59 x 39.3 in. overall) is available in a limited edition of 5. Each panel reveals a distinct exploration of hand architecture, together forming a complete visual taxonomy of sculptural potential.
