Pure dionysian release: a masked figure's open-mouthed ecstasy, adorned with statement baroque necklace, embodies fashion's liminal space between restraint and abandon. The harsh analog flash illuminates skin texture, ornament detail, and genuine emotion—technical rawness that contemporary digital photography often smooths away in pursuit of perfection. This is fashion's night as space for uninhibited corporeal expression, where the mask paradoxically permits authentic abandon by providing anonymity's shield. The baroque jewelry—elaborate metalwork catching light against skin—represents haute couture's decorative excess, yet the wearer's expression transcends mere display to access something primal and unperformed. Sukan captures the carnal energy beneath fashion's refined surface, revealing what happens when fashion's elite gather in private spaces freed from public scrutiny. The motion blur of background figures and raised arms suggests collective energy, transforming individual ecstasy into evidence of broader atmospheric intensity. This photograph documents fashion not as clothes but as culture—as a system that creates spaces for transformation, release, and temporary escape from the composed public personas these figures typically maintain.
Sükan created the ‘La Notte’ series as he was working for international magazines documenting the fashion shows and backstage as well as the social times of the fashion world in Paris, Milan, London, and NY between the years 2004-2010. ‘La Notte’ is mainly from one specific costume party that is given by Carine Roitfeld of French Vogue in Paris. The party was before the social media era specifically before the Instagram era which makes it very private and has not been shown anywhere else.
