Asian Ladies X (1999) places the human figure within an atmosphere of tropical stillness and intimate concentration. The seated woman holds a slender flute close to her body, introducing an unexpected musical element into the composition and connecting the figure with ideas of ritual, performance, and contemplation. Soft natural light models the body against a luminous green background, while the shallow depth of field separates the subject from the surrounding vegetation. Ommer’s restrained composition allows gesture and environment to carry the image, creating a photograph that balances sensuality with serenity and evokes the dreamlike relationship between the female figure and tropical landscapes explored throughout the Asian Ladies series.
The Asian Ladies of this volume were photographed in some of the most beautiful places on earth, the tropical regions of the Philippines, Thailand and the South Sea Islands, the idyllic beaches of Tahiti and Fiji. Locations that have inspired artists as diverse as Gauguin and Nerval to produce their finest works. Ommer examines the implicit sexuality of those poetic landscapes, and with the clarity of his sumptuous photographs has created images of yearning and mystery. A journey into myth and sensuality from which it may be difficult to return.

Uwe Ommer (born 1943) in Bergisch Gladbach is a German photographer. Uwe Ommer became fascinated with photography at a young age. Initially sparked by his interest in photographing birds, he received his first camera at age 14 and began experimenting with his limited equipment. By the time Ommer was 18, he had given up on birds but was improving his skills as a photographer. He began working as an apprentice in a camera shop and soon picked up side projects for local papers, shooting everything from car accidents to weddings, when staff photographers were unavailable. In 2002, Uwe Ommer was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society for the impact of his lifetime of work.
