Shot in exotic tropical locations including Thailand and Tahiti, Asian Ladies V (1999) by Uwe Ommer is an exquisite fine art archival pigment photograph centered on graphic lighting. Distinct from other works in the Asian Ladies volume, this image harnesses sunlight filtering through natural bamboo blinds, casting rhythmic, parallel shadows across the model's torso and profile. The interplay between geometry and soft human contours evokes a sense of tropical intimacy, longing, and poetic mystery. Echoing the artistic tradition of exotic romanticism, Ommer delivers a timeless study in chiaroscuro. Printed as an Archival Pigment Print in a limited edition of 5 prints (40 x 60 cm / 15.74 x  23.62 in.), this work is a sophisticated testament to camera artistry.

The Asian Ladies of this volume were photographed in some of the most beautiful places on earth, the tropical regions of the Philippines, Thailand and the South Sea Islands, the idyllic beaches of Tahiti and Fiji. Locations that have inspired artists as diverse as Gauguin and Nerval to produce their finest works. Ommer examines the implicit sexuality of those poetic landscapes, and with the clarity of his sumptuous photographs has created images of yearning and mystery. A journey into myth and sensuality from which it may be difficult to return.

  • Uwe Ommer (born 1943) in Bergisch Gladbach is a German photographer. Uwe Ommer became fascinated with photography at a young age. Initially sparked by his interest in photographing birds, he received his first camera at age 14 and began experimenting with his limited equipment. By the time Ommer was 18, he had given up on birds but was improving his skills as a photographer. He began working as an apprentice in a camera shop and soon picked up side projects for local papers, shooting everything from car accidents to weddings, when staff photographers were unavailable. In 2002, Uwe Ommer was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society for the impact of his lifetime of work.
