"Chiromorphose" 2010

(Photographies by Mara Sanchez-Renero)

This commanding diptych orchestrates a visual conversation between opposing vertical movements—upward angular formations on the left panel versus downward curved gestures on the right. At over eight feet wide (251 cm), the work envelops viewers in kinesthetic dialogue about directional thrust and spatial dynamics. The left panel's fingers reach skyward in sharp triangular configuration, establishing ascending energy and geometric precision, while the right panel's descending curves create softer, more organic downward flow. This pairing activates contrasting energies without literal mirroring, demonstrating Baixas' virtuoso understanding of hand biomechanics inherited from his deaf grandparents' sign language fluency and decades of professional puppetry. The monumental scale transforms intimate gestures into environmental experience, demanding viewers physically position themselves within the spatial conversation between these two opposing hand states.

This work explores the sculptural capacities of the hands. Stripping them from their symbolism or the functions for which they are normally used, I explored them like someone examining a foreign body, searching for their limits and pushing them in different directions. To do this, I used opposed sculptural concepts like straight-curved, and simple-complex; searched for the interconnection between fingers, and the balance between distances, and tried to generate geometric shapes and textures. At times, I would find shapes that were like doors opening onto a myriad of new possibilities. Throughout the process, I discovered a world of fingers that transformed reality taking it to another level.

It is an abstract development, I didn't try to make the forms resemble known things. Despite this, the results are very suggestive, sometimes they look like architectural constructions or industrial designs, shells, corals, branches, flowers, masks... This effect is produced because many of these real objects are made with the same proportions or mathematical patterns inherent in nature. This is a question that interested me a lot. The fact that the distance of the finger bones coincides with the Fibonacci numbers, related to the golden ratio, which the Greeks and Renaissance considered the ideal of beauty, gives these shapes a special balance and perhaps a divine dimension.

Experience monumentality through vertical contrast hand photography. This expansive framed diptych (50" × 99" total dimensions) commands presence in sophisticated collections through its architectural scale and dynamic tension between upward and downward movements. Available exclusively at The Art Design Project, Miami Beach. Schedule a private viewing to witness how this dialogue between ascending angles and descending curves can anchor your space with powerful exploration of directional energy in hand sculpture.

  • Nico Baixas, also known as Gos-com-fuig, is a creative interdisciplinary artist from Spain, whose work focuses solely on the hands. Born into a family of puppeteers, Nico started performing at a very young age with his parent's company, La Claca, which collaborated with the famous painter Joan Miró. As a result, Nico spent most of his childhood in art museums. Inspired by the works of Calder, Giacometti, Mondrian, Lewitt, and others, decides to pursue an artistic career studying music and working in cinema, before finding his path as a performer in the European avant-garde theater scene. In 2014 I joined Cirque du Soleil for the creation of KURIOS which became one of the company's most acclaimed shows, performing in New York, Tokyo, Paris, London, and Rome, among other cities. GENERACIONES'07 awarded his latest project a grant, and it was presented at the ARCO Art Fair in Madrid.
