In Plano, Rodrigo Spinel leverages his background as an architect to investigate the transformative potential of repetitive line work. Rendered in Chinese ink on 250 g Fabriano paper, the piece presents an intricate topographic map where geometric blocks and cylindrical forms emerge from dense contour hatchings. Much like a mason laying individual bricks, Spinel builds complex spatial illusions through disciplined, unit-by-unit drawing, turning flat paper into a tactile architectural survey. As a prominent work from the Illusions of the Line series, Plano exemplifies the synergy between patient craftsmanship, structural geometry, and contemporary spatial inquiry.

The project aims to highlight the potential of the line, which, when repeated, is capable of creating complex images. The patience, focus, and perseverance dedicated to constructing the drawing evoke the work of a mason who, brick by brick, assembles everything from the simplest to the most complex structures. Similar to a brick in a wall, the line demonstrates that its value does not lie as an independent unit but as part of a whole. It is within this integration that its full significance is appreciated.

Rodrigo Spinel finds in drawing a way to explore the relevance of detail in the construction of images, objects and spaces. The repetition of tiny elements, such as the line in a drawing, leads to the construction of complex universes where that detail acquires value and becomes the basic unit, like the brick in a wall. The gesture of the repetition of small elements and the time invested in doing so is used as a tool to give “value” to the images that are constructed.
