Synthesizing his architectural training with a meticulous draftsmanship process, Rodrigo Spinel creates Anverso Derecha 100 Valor Real, a compelling piece from his Paper Money is White series. Executed in Chinese ink on 250 g Fabriano paper, the artwork isolates and redrawns line-by-line the right section of a banknote's obverse, extracting serial numbers, numerals, and security lattice into a textured geometric grid. Spinel reflects on the intrinsic value of labor, time, and focus, stripping currency of its transactional utility to imbue the physical drawing with a new, artistic worth through repetitive linework. This original banknote ink drawing stands as a refined, thought-provoking study in engraving craftsmanship, structural pattern, and monetary iconography.

The project aims to highlight the potential of the line, which, when repeated, is capable of creating complex images. The patience, focus, and perseverance dedicated to constructing the drawing evoke the work of a mason who, brick by brick, assembles everything from the simplest to the most complex structures. Similar to a brick in a wall, the line demonstrates that its value does not lie as an independent unit but as part of a whole. It is within this integration that its full significance is appreciated.

Rodrigo Spinel finds in drawing a way to explore the relevance of detail in the construction of images, objects and spaces. The repetition of tiny elements, such as the line in a drawing, leads to the construction of complex universes where that detail acquires value and becomes the basic unit, like the brick in a wall. The gesture of the repetition of small elements and the time invested in doing so is used as a tool to give “value” to the images that are constructed.
