Informed by the structural clarity of his architectural background, Rodrigo Spinel constructs Anverso Derecha 500 Valor Real, a key work from his conceptual series Paper Money is White. Executed in Chinese ink on 250 g Fabriano paper, the piece extracts and meticulously redraws line-by-line the right obverse portion of a 500 denomination banknote, transforming its currency engravings and serial numbers into a dense, multi-layered geometric grid. Spinel challenges conventional ideas of monetary worth by detaching these security patterns from commercial exchange, relocating true value into the painstaking dedication, patience, and time required by hand-drawn repetition. This original banknote ink drawing delivers a compelling dialogue on fine art draftsmanship, financial symbolism, and modern abstraction.

The project aims to highlight the potential of the line, which, when repeated, is capable of creating complex images. The patience, focus, and perseverance dedicated to constructing the drawing evoke the work of a mason who, brick by brick, assembles everything from the simplest to the most complex structures. Similar to a brick in a wall, the line demonstrates that its value does not lie as an independent unit but as part of a whole. It is within this integration that its full significance is appreciated.

Rodrigo Spinel finds in drawing a way to explore the relevance of detail in the construction of images, objects and spaces. The repetition of tiny elements, such as the line in a drawing, leads to the construction of complex universes where that detail acquires value and becomes the basic unit, like the brick in a wall. The gesture of the repetition of small elements and the time invested in doing so is used as a tool to give “value” to the images that are constructed.
