Merging structural architectural precision with an insightful critique of currency and labor, Rodrigo Spinel presents Anverso Derecha 100 / 500 Valor Real Diptych, a compelling two-piece installation created in 2019. Featured in his Paper Money is White series, these companion works in Chinese ink on 250 g Fabriano paper recreate the right obverse panels of 100 and 500 denomination banknotes, converting serial numbers, numerals, and security patterns into dense, multi-hued cross-hatched grids. Spinel extracts these monetary engravings from transactional circulation, asserting that true value resides in the artist's meticulous time investment and hand-drawn repetition. This original banknote ink drawings diptych offers collectors a sophisticated pair of works designed to make an impactful conceptual statement together.
The project stems from a reflection on the value of work, time, and effort dedicated to constructing images as complex and full of meaning as those found on banknotes. The meticulous process of redrawing segments of these designs line by line seeks to extract their details, expressions, and symbols from the context of money, highlighting the memories and anecdotes they evoke. In this process, the repetition of lines gradually imbues the work with a new value.
